ALL STUDENTS: Work towards the end of year show, but can also participate in our annual Choreographic competition held in July. We also run a very popular school holiday programme in the July School Holidays; that includes dance, drama, and vocal tuition. Selected students can enter dance competitions around New Zealand, however this is invitation only, and requires numerous private lessons. Examinations in Ballet, Tap and Jazz are available, but the correct classes must be attended to participate in these activities.
+Ballet: All ballet classes follow the ISTD syllabus (Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance) an internationally recognized dance syllabus. Children in ballet classes may prepare for their ISTD exams from age 5. Although exams are not compulsory, they are encouraged. Please note partaking in exams requires exam fees and extra lessons around exam time. All ballet students need to wear ballet attire, leotard, stockings and ballet shoes, hair must be worn in a bun, or at the least, in a ponytail off the face. Exam uniform will also need to be purchased. Your grade will be determined on experience, age and ability, so may change after being assessed by your teacher. We prefer parents do not sit in the studio, but are welcome to watch from the lounge viewing area in Milford. Ballet students work towards examinations and a small part in the end of year show.
++Please note Ballet Grade 3 and 4 exam students MUST attend 2 ballet classes per week, if they want to sit exams.
Fun Jazz: Fun Jazz classes, are a good starting point for most novice students, but can be continued until adult age! Classes are a little less formal than exam classes, but do cover a warm up, stretching, learning steps across the floor and choreographing routines, latest music is used, and steps similar to what you would see on music videos. Age break downs are according to classes at school: Juniors are years 0 (Starting school in 2012) and younger year 1s. Intermediate classes are for older year 1s and year 2s. Senior classes are for years 3 and 4, Advanced is for years 5 and 6, and Extension classes are for years 7 and 8. We sometimes change these bench marks according to necessity, and numbers enrolled. You will be advised if class criteria have changed, or you need moving. Unlike exam classes siblings of different ages can be put in the same class, (for convenience), but usually in the younger siblings correct group. Fun Jazz students work towards the end of year show.
## Teen fun classes are for students at high school, these classes do not rely heavily on technique or stretching, but are more dance orientated, working on routines and choreography. Ideal for not so experienced dancers, but also lots of fun and a little more relaxed…although still a highly energetic class for more experienced students.
There are no uniform requirements for any fun class, and Parents are welcome to sit in and watch.
*Jazz Exams: All jazz exam students work towards jazz examinations in the ISTD Syllabus. (Imperial society of Teachers of Dance) which is an internationally recognized syllabus. 6 years of age is the youngest we will take Jazz exam students. If you have participated in exams before you should know your new grade for 2012, discuss this with Alicia if you are not sure. We prefer parents do not sit in on these classes but view from the viewing lounge.
New students need to leave the grade blank, or speak to us first, and we will pop you into the correct grade for your ability, experience and age. It is very important when sitting exams you are sitting at the right level FOR YOU, not where your friends/ siblings may be. Jazz students will need to pay extra for examination fees, uniforms and extra lessons closer to exam time. They also have a small part in our end of year show.
**Tap: We are delighted to introduce tap classes this year, and our ISTD syllabus is an internationally recognized syllabus. Students will aim to participate in tap examinations in 2012, although not compulsory, exams are encouraged. Tap students will need to wear tap shoes, and pay extra for examination entry fees, uniform and additional classes around exam time. We prefer parents do not sit in studio for these classes, but view from the viewing lounge.
// Boys Classes: We have 4 different levels of BOYS ONLY classes. Experience has proven that boys do much better in classes without girls. They certainly enjoy different music, and love learning more athletic moves, such as break dancing and more hip hop styles, such as popping etc. The class break down for boys is Juniors: (Years 0/1 at school), Intermediates (years 2 and 3 at school). Seniors: (years 4, 5 and 6 at school).and Advanced: (Intermediate and older). As a “fun” class, the boy’s classes do not have any uniform requirements, and work towards participation in the end of year concert.
} Adults: Our adult classes are always Fun, Fun, Fun, come along and have a laugh, get your self fit, and perform in our end of year show. Adult’s class is a fun introduction to jazz/ hip hop and funk (depending on the night!) we do a small warm up, minimal stretching, then learn some moves across the floor before learning simple routines. Schedule our Tuesday night (EASY) class or Wednesday night (HARD) class into your diaries…term fees now apply.
=Contemporary: Contemporary is a beautiful dance style, that requires some experience, as it is quite technically demanding. We are very fortunate to have Gina Janus-Spedding take these classes. Gina is arguably one of New Zealand’s leading Contemporary choreographers, and students learning this style with Gina will be well extended in this genre. Junior Contemporary is best suited to school grades 5, 6, 7 and 8. Senior Contemporary is best suited to school grades 9 and over. (Any students younger than this need to speak to us first, so we can ascertain if they are ready to join these classes)
^^FF Crew classes: These are invite only classes. If you are invited to join these classes, your technique, flexibility and strength will be pushed and worked on, the classes are demanding, and a high level of commitment and talent are needed. Invites will go out towards the end of the year for these classes, once we see who is returning to Funky Feet. You are still expected to attend other classes at Funky feet, as usually the extreme classes are seen as an addition to your training…not your ONLY training. (Juniors will be chosen from children aged 7-9) (Intermediate Extreme will be chosen from children aged 10-12) Advanced extreme will be chosen from students aged over 12). Please let us now if you may interested in this “extension” of your training, ideally you will be attending examination classes or have passed examinations at Funky Feet or have won class awards previously….if you are unsure if you are suitable for this class, please enroll, and we will look at your background, and advise you of your acceptance into this programme.
